Exploring ballast water treatment technologies – Inactivation performance of UV-LEDs

Exploring ballast water treatment technologies – Inactivation performance of UV-LEDs As part of ongoing efforts to test and validate maritime technologies, AquaTech testing and Environmental laboratory at DHI supported a project exploring the use of UV-LED systems for disinfecting ballast water. The study was conducted in a controlled laboratory environment using a UV-LED collimated beam […]
Ecotoxicity assessment of a chemical using the sediment bioassay using Corophium sp. in compliance with OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)

Ecotoxicity assessment of a chemical using the Sediment Bioassay Using Corophium sp. in compliance with OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) At DHI Environmental Laboratory, we conduct a wide range of ecotoxicological tests to evaluate the potential effects of substances on aquatic life. Recently, our team tested the sediment-dwelling amphipod Corophium sp. to assess […]
Ultrasonic antifouling system for preventing marine growth onboard ships – Initial evaluation of efficacy and environmental side effects

Ultrasonic antifouling system for preventing marine growth onboard ships – Initial evaluation of efficacy and environmental side effects A new independent study, funded by a grant from the Danish Maritime Fund, evaluated ultrasonic antifouling systems installed on two commercial vessels and in harbour trials. The study found promising antifouling effects on test panels and some […]
Verification of disinfection systems

Verification of disinfection systems in aquaculture Ultraviolet (UV) light is used to disinfect water due to its ability to inactivate pathogenic microorganisms. Several validation test methods exist for UV reactors, for instance published by USEPA (2020) on drinking water systems and ÖNORM (2020), which was harmonized with the DIN 19294. Within aquaculture, Chile and Norway […]
Verification of ballast water compliance monitoring devices

Verification of ballast water compliance monitoring devices The compliance of existing ballast water management devices is allowed both with detailed analysis in microscope and indicative testing with a compliance monitoring device (CMD). DHI assisted as independent test body of the BallastWise CMD to obtain an Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) statement via ETA-Danmark. The test plan […]

Maritime innovation project – Danish Maritime Test Center

DHI is preparing the initiation of the project “Danish Maritime Test Center” based on a grant from the Danish Maritime Fund. The project’s purpose is to develop a maritime test center capable of providing consultancy and facilities that cannot or will not be established by individual companies. The project will be performed in collaboration with companies and stakeholders within Blue Denmark.
Biofouling at DHI’s Maritime Evaluation Facility

DHI’s Maritime Technology Evaluation Facility is very suitable for biofouling experiments. We have the possibility to establish ambient biofilm on plates for testing the efficacy of e.g., cleaning instruments/ROV’s (Remotely Operated Vehicles), paints, and we carry out ecotoxicity tests, risk assessment of effluent water, quantify leaching, etc.
