Biofouling
DHI provides testing of biofouling prevention and removal technologies
Looking for an efficient, all-in-one testing solution?
At our land-based test facilities in Denmark and Singapore, we offer independent testing of a wide range of biofouling prevention and removal technologies. These include robotic cleaning systems, antifouling paints and coatings, UV-based solutions, and marine growth prevention systems (MGPS).
Our facilities access to natural seawater allows us to recreate real-world marine conditions, ensuring that your technology is evaluated with high accuracy and reliability. Our team can perform in-situ testing anywhere in the world, ensuring flexible and timely support to meet your needs. Whether you are developing innovative solutions or seeking regulatory validation, we provide the data and documentation you need to move forward with confidence.
Explore our services
We can conduct independent immersion tests of coated panels to evaluate antifouling performance under controlled marine conditions. These tests provide reliable data on durability, fouling resistance, and long-term effectiveness of coatings, ensuring compliance with recognized international guidelines and supporting product development and approval processes.
We can perform type-approval style tests of in-water cleaning systems in accordance with ISO 20679. Our services cover assessments of cleaning efficiency, impact on coating integrity, and environmental safety, helping manufacturers and operators demonstrate compliance and readiness for regulatory acceptance in key markets.
We can test the compatibility of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) with hull coatings to ensure that inspection, cleaning, or maintenance activities do not damage protective surfaces. Tests are conducted in line with international coating performance standards and provide assurance that innovative robotic methods can be safely deployed without compromising vessel performance or asset protection.
We can carry out independent testing of marine growth prevention systems (MGPS) in accordance with the Global TestNet Guidelines. Our approach verifies efficacy against biofouling organisms, assesses operational durability, and generates recognized data to support both product development and regulatory approval.
We can provide environmental impact testing and regulatory support to ensure technologies comply with existing and emerging requirements. This includes documentation aligned with the forthcoming ISO 6319 on in-water cleaning of biofouling, enabling technology developers and ship operators to meet global standards while minimizing ecological risks.
Standards and guidelines
We carry out testing in accordance with leading international guidelines to ensure reliable, recognized results. This includes following the Global TestNet Guidelines for MGPS evaluation and ISO 20679 on testing of ship biofouling in-water cleaning systems. We also support regulatory documentation, including preparation for the forthcoming ISO 6319, which covers conducting and documenting in-water cleaning of biofouling on ships.
