Exploring ballast water treatment technologies – Inactivation performance of UV-LEDs
As part of ongoing efforts to test and validate maritime technologies, AquaTech testing and Environmental laboratory at DHI supported a project exploring the use of UV-LED systems for disinfecting ballast water. The study was conducted in a controlled laboratory environment using a UV-LED collimated beam setup to treat ballast water containing representative species of zooplankton and phytoplankton.
The disinfection effectiveness was assessed through CMFDA vital staining and MPN assays across a range of single-wavelength ultraviolet fluences, with additional evaluation of the potential benefits of multi-wavelength UV-LED exposure.
Findings demonstrated strong disinfection performance, positioning UV-LEDs as a promising alternative to conventional UV systems with lamps containing mercury. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on UV-LED applications in ballast water management and supports the advancement of testing capabilities for the global maritime industry.
